The rod protrudes roughly 3 inches from the shell. A great shower of sparks is produced after the black coating is removed from the rod. I have large hands and this does not feel cumbersome to grasp or to strike. Did I mention that the rod is substantial when compared to a plastic handled striker. This is the fire starter to buy. Being able to buy a USA made, hand crafted item at this price point is amazing. I will be buying more for gifts. If I am willing to part with them.
